Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi Archdiocese Appointed Apostolic Administrator of Nakuru, Kenya

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop David Kamau as the Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru in Kenya. 

The Holy Father’s Representative in Kenya, Archbishop Hubertus van Megen announced the Papal appointment at Tumsifu Centre Saturday, March 19, during the installation of the new Local Ordinary of Kisumu Archdiocese, Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba.

Announcing the Papal appointment of Bishop Kamau to temporarily oversee the administration of Nakuru Diocese, the Apostolic Nuncio in Kenya who also represents the Holy Father in South Sudan said that it would take “some time” before a new Bishop is appointed for Nakuru Diocese.

“As of now, the Diocese of Nakuru is vacant and we’ll need some time to find a new Bishop. For the Diocese, we had to appoint an Apostolic Administrator; the Bishop who will govern the Diocese for the time being till a new Bishop has been found,” Archbishop van Megen said March 19.

He added, “This Apostolic Administrator we have found in the person of Bishop David Kamau who at the moment is the Auxiliary in Nairobi. For the coming months, he will be the Apostolic Administrator in Nakuru.”

Born in 1955, Bishop Kamau was ordained a Priest of his native Archdiocese of Nairobi in 1982.

He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi in 1999 and assigned the Titular See of Oëa in Libya.

Ordained a Bishop in March 2000, Bishop Kamau was appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Nairobi following the retirement of John Cardinal Njue.

His role as Apostolic Administrator of Nairobi Archdiocese ceased last November, when Archbishop Philip Anyolo was installed the Local Ordinary.
