Vulnerable minors at the Salesians of Don Bosco – Children And Life Mission (CALM) in Namugongo in Uganda’s Archdiocese of Kampala are receiving nutritional support from members of the Religious Institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) in a collaborative initiative.
With funding from the Donald D. Lynch Family Foundation, an organization that gives to Catholic causes to end human suffering, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Salesian Missions, has been able to purchase five dairy cows for the CALM centre.
In a Monday, August 22 report, SDB officials say the cows help to prevent “malnutrition among the children who live in the orphanage and attend the primary school at Don Bosco CALM.”
“Salesians at Don Bosco CALM face challenges in feeding the children, paying for their school fees and scholastic materials, and providing medical assistance,” the Director of Salesian Missions has been quoted as saying.
Fr. Gus Baek adds that the cows “will have a significant impact on the Salesians’ ability to provide nutrition for the children, something that is needed.”
In the report, the Salesian Priest expresses his appreciation to DD Lynch Family Foundation for supporting the children at Don Bosco CALM.
Prior to the donation of the cows, the DD Lynch Family Foundation had provided funding for a modern cowshed so the cows live in good conditions and are cared for by a veterinary doctor and a full-time shepherd, Salesian officials say.
