Late Catholic Bishop in Niger Eulogized as “a tireless pastor devoted to mission”

Bishop Guy Armand Romano, the Bishop emeritus of Niamey Archdiocese in Niger who passed on in France on Thursday, November 23 has been eulogized as a “a tireless pastor, totally devoted to the mission.”

The member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists - CSsR), who had started his Episcopal Ministry in September 1984 resigned in January 2003 due to poor health.

He passed on in Paris, France, at the age of 86.

In the statement issued Friday, November 24, Archbishop Djalwana Laurent Lompo of Niger’s Niamey Archdiocese offers his “sincere condolences to his biological family, his religious family, and to all those who knew him.”

Archbishop Lompo says the funeral of the late Bishop “will take place in Arc-en-Barrois on November 30, 2023 at 3 pm.”

He goes on to eulogize Bishop Romano as “an affable man, a tireless pastor totally devoted to the mission.”

“Bishop Guy Romano worked with great zeal for many years for evangelization in Niger and inter-religious dialogue, particularly with our Muslim brothers and sisters,” he says, and adds, “He loved God and people.”

The Catholic Archbishop implores, “May the Lord, in His Mercy, welcome to Himself His valiant servant, may He make the light of His face shine upon him and grant him the reward promised to faithful servants.”

Born in Dijon in June 1937, Bishop Romano was ordained a Priest in February 1964.

Prior to his appointment as Bishop in Niger, he served as Parish Priest in Zinder (Niger). 

Pope St. John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Niamey in June 1984 assigning him the Titular See of Caput Cilla.
