PMS Director in Indian Ocean Island Nations Appointed Apostolic Vicar in Mauritius

Pope Francis has appointed the Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) for the territories of the Episcopal Conference of the Indian Ocean (C.E.D.O.I.) the Apostolic Vicar for the Apostolic Vicariate of Rodrigues in Mauritius.

The appointment of Mons. Michel Moura was made public Wednesday, December 20 by the Holy See Press Office.

The Mauritian Vicariate has been vacant since September 2020 when Bishop Alain Harel was transferred to the Diocese of Port Victoria in the Indian Ocean Island of Seychelles.

Fr. Luc René Young Chen Yin has been overseeing the Vicariate’s activities since January 2021 when he was appointed Apostolic Administrator. 

Born in September 1963 in Vacoas-Phoenix in Mauritius, Mons. Moura was ordained a Priest for the Diocese of Port-Louis in August 2006.

The Bishop-elect attended the University of Mauritius before joining the Major Seminaries in the Indian Ocean Island of Réunion and Nantes in France Priestly studies.

As a Priest, Mons. Moura has served as a Parish Vicar, Parish Priest, and Administrator of St. Louis Cathedral of Mauritius’ Port-Louis Diocese.

He has been the Vicar General of the Diocese of Port-Louis and Secretary of the Diocesan Presbyteral Council since 2018.  

Once he is consecrated, Mons. Moura will serve as the second Apostolic Vicar of the Vicariate that was erected from the Diocese of Port-Louis in October 2002. 

Rodrigues Vicariate has a population of 39,400 Catholics, according to 2020 statistics.
