Pope Francis Appoints Italian-Born Clergy as Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Giancarlo Dellagiovanna, a member of the Clergy of Italy’s Tortona Catholic Diocese, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso and assigned him the Titular See of Sistroniana with the dignity of Archbishop.

The Ouagadougou-based Apostolic Nunciature has been vacant since July 2024 when the Holy Father transferred Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty to Nigeria.

The latest appointment of Mons. Dellagiovanna who has been serving as Nunciature Counsellor in the Section for General Affairs of the Vatican Secretary of State was made public on Saturday, March 15 by the Holy See Press Office.

Born in Voghera, Pavia, Italy in September 1961, Mons. Dellagiovanna was ordained a Priest in June 1999. He entered the Holy See diplomatic service in July 2005.

The Vatican diplomat, who speaks English, Spanish and French in addition to his Italian native language has previously served in various Apostolic Nunciatures, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Italy, and the Netherlands besides in the Section for General Affairs of the Vatican Secretariat of State.
