Bishop Maurício Agostinho Camuto of Caxito Diocese in Angola has appealed for support for victims of floods in the country’s Bengo Province.

A January report by VER Angola indicates that 300 homes were flooded following the opening of the Mabubas floodgates.

In his homily during Holy Mass at St. Anna Cathedral of Caxito Diocese, Bishop Camuto called on the people of God in his Episcopal See to join the national calls for support to those affected by the floods.

“We're hearing the appeals on the radio and television, but as a Christian community we must also do something for these brothers and sisters who have been hit by this calamity,” the Angolan Catholic Bishop said.

He added, “We must show our charity; let's not close our hearts; let's help them with clothes and food, because according to the information we're receiving, many of them have lost everything and haven't had time to get out of their homes.”

“The Caritas commission should collect some goods to help these brothers and sisters,” the Angolan member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit under the protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CSSp/Spiritans/Holy Ghost Fathers) emphasized.

He went on to urge relevant authorities in the Southern African nation to take adequate measures to avoid such disasters.

“I would also like to call on those who supervise the construction of houses to remind people to build in better places, away from riverbanks which are always a danger because we never know when the waters will rise,” Bishop Camuto said.

The Spiritan Bishop, who has been at the helm of Caxito Diocese since his Episcopal Consecration in August 2020 added, “We have a lot of mountains; we have a lot of high places. Let's build in those places.”
