Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi of Cameroon’s Buea Diocese has lifted the prohibition on his predecessor, Bishop Emmanuel B. Bushu, from concelebrating with him and celebration Holy Mass in public in the Cameroonian Episcopal See without his “explicit permission”.

In a letter dated 22 November 2023 and circulated on January 7, Bishop Bibi cited “opposition and interference in my administration for three years now” as as some of the reasons behind the prohibition.

In a Sunday, January 14 statement, Bishop Bibi lifts the prohibition, explaining that “issues” between him and Bishop Bushu “have been amicably resolved.”

“I am hereby lifting the prohibition on the Emeritus Bishop from concelebrating with me or celebrating public Masses in the Diocese of Buea,” Bishop Bibi says in the one-page statement shared with ACI Africa.

The Local Ordinary of Buea highlights circumstances leading to his decision to lift the prohibition, saying, “On the 13th of January 2024, Bishop Bushu made a declaration in which he regretted these misunderstandings.”

He appeals to the people of God under his pastoral care “to continue praying for him (Bishop Bushu) to have good health as he takes a much deserved rest, and for me also, to be guided by God’s grace as I shepherd this local Church of Buea.”

Amid resistance to his administrative decisions and online attacks, including online petitions against him, and Facebook posts, Bishop Bibi has received support from various quarters, including the Vatican, as well as members of the Bamenda Provincial Episcopal Conference (BAPEC).

Last November, members of the Clergy of Buea Diocese expressed their support for Bishop Bibi, weighing in on social media posts against their Local Ordinary, including those from Nchumbonga George Lekelefac such as an ongoing apostolic visitation, Seeking Transparency and Accountability: An Examination of Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi's Leadership, Bishop Michael Bibi, The Father, The Bishop, The Rock On Which Buea Diocese Is Built, The Truth and nothing but the truth about Buea Diocese under Bishop Michael Bibi, and Ex-cardination of suspended priests of Buea Diocese: a solution?

Despite the controversies, last September, the Cameroonian Catholic Bishop, who started his Episcopal Ministry in March 2017 as the Auxiliary Bishop of Bamenda Archdiocese in the Central African nation was honored by the country’s NewsWatch Newspaper for his “exceptional skills” in leading the people of God and managing the property of Buea Diocese.
