Mbeya, 17 January, 2024 / 7:31 pm (ACI Africa).
At the launch of the Catholic University of Mbeya (CUoM) in Tanzania, Bishop Flavian Matindi Kassala of the country’s Geita Diocese has highlighted virtues needed for the success of the institution of higher learning.
In his homily during the Holy Mass for CUoM following its approval by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) as a fully fledged University, the Vice President of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) highlighted humility and patience among virtues behind the growth and development of universities.
“Let us always understand that our success is maintained in humility, in kindness, in gentleness, in patience and in treating one another with forgiveness,” Bishop Kassala said Tuesday, January 16.
He decried incidents of antagonism between lecturers and students, including torture in the name of helping students succeed, and emphasized, “When a University lacks humility, kindness, gentleness, and patience, it can start to deteriorate.”
The Tanzanian Catholic Bishop highlighted the negative effects of bad relationships to the alumni, saying, “When graduates leave the University, they come out with hatred of the whole institution, or some hate the entire education system. This is because while they have been given skills, these values are lacking.”
