Michael Cardinal Czerny, who has been in Benin for a four-day pastoral trip, has used the image of “a lung” to remind the Pastoral Agents in the West African nation about their ability to “breathe” freshness into Universal Catholicism.
In his address to officials of the country’s Catholic Bishops' Commissions for Social, Pastoral Care and Religious Congregations working in the social field on January 19, the third day of his January 17-20 pastoral trip to Benin, Cardinal Czerny said that the Pastoral Agents represent “a lung of youth, thought and imagination that can breathe fresh air into the whole Church.”
The Vatican-based Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development (DPIHD) highlighted three departments that the Dicastery has established to facilitate the ministry of Pastoral Agents.
“Our Listening and Dialogue Section is always ready to take on new challenges with you. The Research and Reflection Section is at your service to find answers to your most pressing challenges. Communication and Feedback is there to help you put your ideas and best practices into circulation,” he said.
Cardinal Czerny continued, “We, in Rome, can offer you this accompaniment in your irreplaceable responsibilities, and you can offer the Pope and the other Churches what is maturing in your discernment, the precious insights present in the wisdom of your people, the new inculturations of the Gospel that deepen the awareness of Revelation that we have matured up to now.”
