The representative of the Holy Father in Sudan and Eritrea, Archbishop Luís Miguel Muñoz Cárdaba, has been transferred to the Southern African nation of Mozambique.

The latest change in the diplomatic offices of the three African countries was made public on Tuesday, January 23 by the Holy See Press Office.

Born in Toledo, Spain, in 1965, Archbishop Cárdaba was ordained to the Priesthood in 1992; he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on 1 April 2001.

He served in various Apostolic Nunciatures, including Greece, Mexico, Belgium, Italy, Australia, France, and Turkey before being appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Sudan and to Eritrea in March 2020, and Consecrated Bishop in July 2020.

In Mozambique, Archbishop Cárdaba is set to succeed Archbishop Piergiorgio Bertoldi, who was transferred to the Dominican Republic in May 2023. Archbishop Bertoldi is also the Apostolic Delegate to Puerto Rico.

Archbishop Cárdaba has been vocal about the ongoing violence between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the paramilitary force under General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, and army units of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) that are loyal to the head of Sudan's transitional governing Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

In a 27 June 2023 interview with ACI Stampa, ACI Africa’s sister news agency in Italian, Archbishop Cárdaba emphasized the need to work towards resolving the crisis, saying, “All energies must be combined to achieve peace and to be able to rebuild the country in peace.”

The Vatican diplomat said, “I believe that if this war remains, this strong sense of the communion of people against the conflict and in favor of peace and necessary progress in such a poor country is also created.”

Archbishop Cárdaba added that the Holy See “closely follows all these attempts at peace and supports them.”
