There is much “more” to the Lenten Season than the “simple preparation” for the celebration of Easter, Archbishop Luzizila Kiala of the Catholic Archdiocese of Malanje in Angola has said.

Speaking at Holy Mass for the opening of the National Meeting of Liturgy Coordinators in Angola, Archbishop Kiala emphasized the need to practice “new life in the spirit” during the Lenten Season.

“More than a simple preparation for Easter, Lent is a rehearsal for new life in the spirit; a time to break with all the expressions of evil that exist in us, burying the old man; a time to open ourselves to the ever-new life that springs from the cross,” he said.

The Angolan Catholic Archbishop went on to describe the period of Lent as “a time to repent of our sins and to change something about ourselves so that we can be better and live closer to God.”

“Christians should therefore withdraw for reflection and to draw closer to God; this search includes prayer, almsgiving, charity and fasting,” Archbishop Kiala said during the Friday, February 16 Eucharistic celebration at the chapel of the Bishops' Conference of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe (CEAST) in the Archdiocese of Luanda.

Lent, he continued, “is a time to convert ourselves to God's plan, listening to and taking in His Word, which proposes that we seek first the kingdom of God and His justice; it's time to renew and revive the option of our faith made at our baptism, in the desire for a new beginning in following as a disciple of the Lord.”

Focusing his attention on fasting, the Local Ordinary of Malanje since his November 2021 installation that followed his September 21 appointment said the practice of fasting “is a form of penance that consists of depriving oneself of something, especially food.”

“Lenten fasting is a sign of inner conversion to the fundamental values of the Gospel of Christ,” he said, and added, “Fasting is a fight against passions and vices; fasting is the proven remedy for purity of heart.”

The purity of heart, Archbishop Kiala went on to explain, “means the peace that can only exist when the heart is turned towards God and impregnated with his Spirit. It serves to open us up to the grace of contemplation, intercession, and the anointing of the Spirit.”

“Fasting enables us to acquire mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart,” the Catholic Church leader, who started his Episcopal Ministry in August 2013 as Bishop of Angola’s Sumbe Diocese said.

He called upon the Diocesan delegates of the National Liturgy Commission to help the people of God live through the Lenten Season through preparation.

The Catholic Archbishop said, “Let us always prepare carefully for this favorable time, the time to act and as liturgical agents and coordinators in our dioceses and archdioceses; we must do our best and walk together so that people can understand this favorable time.”

He added, “We must know how to share what we have, what we are, above all the richness of our faith, our life of charity, our life of hope.”
