Storytellers in Africa have been invited to participate in the 10th edition of "Conveying Africa" contest through which Harambee Africa International (HAI), a Rome-based Catholic development agency, seeks to communicate the challenges, hopes, richness, and diversity of the continent.

HAI Communications officer, Rossella Miranda said that Africans are particularly encouraged to tell the stories about their continent in the contest which will receive submissions from across the globe.

“As part of our mission, we are particularly keen to encourage participation from African storytellers, ensuring that authentic African voices are highlighted and celebrated in this global platform,” Miranda told ACI Africa on Wednesday, February 21.

She said that the international contest aims at contributing to “a more real image of Africa” and promoting knowledge of “a continent that is a treasure for all.”

According to HAI, the award aims to shed light on the greatness of small stories. “It's not about presenting a naive or simplistic view of Africa, but about demonstrating that alongside numerous difficulties, there is also hope and serious work being done by many individuals and organizations,” HAI says while announcing the contest which has been running since 2004.

Participants in the contest have been asked to submit their entries by June 30.

The competition welcomes audiovisual productions that illustrate stories of courage, development, integration, and solidarity.

It is divided into four categories including professional audiovisuals by individuals, professional audiovisuals by non-profit organizations, professional audiovisuals by commercial entities, and audiovisuals by young creatives under the age of 25.

The monetary prize is 1000 euros each for the first three categories and 500 euros for the young creatives category.

HAI has announced that special consideration will be given to entries that provide an authentic view and can tell where Africa is heading, highlighting the opportunities, challenges, and progress of the continent.

According to the Rome-based development organization, themes that project the value of education and training as essential means for achieving the full promotion of the individual and peaceful development of African society will be given priority.

Themes that promote value of solidarity and mutual assistance will also be prioritized in the evaluation of the submissions.

Contestants must also try to center their pieces on the fundamental role of the family in individual growth and the development of society.

Participants have been urged to include subtitles in audiovisuals that are submitted in languages that are not English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

HAI’s competition, for documentary videos and video clips, is held every two years. The award ceremony for the ninth edition took place on 30 September 2022.
