Angolan Catholic University Lauded for Commitment to Research, Training “new generations"

The Catholic University of Angola (UCAN) has been lauded for positioning itself among the most prestigious institutions in the Southern Africa country by contributing to quality research and training.

In his homily during the thanksgiving Mass to mark the 25 years of existence of UCAN, the Local Ordinary of Luanda Archdiocese praised the institution that started in February 1999, for standing the test of time and pursuing the purposes for which it was created.

“In these years our academic community has maintained a scientific and cultural level that has made it one of the most prestigious in the country,” Archbishop Filomeno do Nascimento Vieira Dias said during the Wednesday, February 21 Eucharistic celebration that was held at the UCAN campus in Luanda.

He said, “Our society has learned to look with sympathy, credibility and admiration at this university, recognizing its often arduous and tiring commitment to research and the training of new generations.”

Archbishop Dias expressed gratitude to God for the 25 years of existence of UCAN, and expressed optimism for more success in future.

“We give thanks to the Lord for everything we have received, especially for what we have received over these 25 years without asking. We know that the Lord wants to shower us with even greater gifts,” the Angolan Archbishop said.

He continued, “These 25 years have marked the path and life of our country, strengthening the best intellectual energies in many fields of knowledge.”

“In recent years, despite a few setbacks, also as a result of the various storms facing societies in general, there has been no shortage of significant moments of ideal collaboration with the various realities in order to find ways to enable us to take high leaps, as we set out to do from the beginning,” Archbishop Dias said.

In her speech during the event, the rector of the Catholic University of Angola, Sr. Maria de Assunção announced the activities that will mark the jubilee year will end in 2025.

“I just wanted to remind you that this is the beginning. Various activities will take place throughout this year and various jubilees will take place. Why not the students' jubilee, the teachers' jubilee? Because the jubilee is a time to look back at our values and evaluate what we've done and what we could perhaps have improved.” Sr. Assunção said.
