The Catholic Diocese of Hwange in Zimbabwe is working in partnership with Stella Mundi, a commercial entity affiliated with the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishop’s Conference (ZCBC) to foster the Diocese’s self-reliance amid dwindling donor funds.

Following a workshop that the two entities organized, Bishop Raphael Ncube of Hwange acknowledged the efforts of Stella Mundi in fostering a self-reliant church which he said is currently facing a shortage of donors.

“The lack of funds to build institutions has necessitated the diocese’s search for alternative means of sustaining its operations,” Bishop Ncube said in a Tuesday, March 5 report, adding, “We did not see how funds to build our institutions were generated. Now we are trying to do it ourselves.”

The Bishop said the Diocese’s theme for 2024 which is “Christ our hope: A synodal journey towards a self-reliant Church,” resonates with Stella Mundi’s objective of supporting dioceses through various initiatives.

From the partnership, the Diocese of Hwange, like other dioceses in the southern African nation, will access Stella Mundi’s business partners.

The Diocese will also benefit from various services such as agricultural finance, medical aid, and laboratory services, among others that the constituents of Stella Mundi specialize in.

In his message at the workshop that concluded last week, Bishop Ncube said that the shortage of drugs in hospitals managed by the Diocese will be partly addressed through the partnership.

He said that the partnership with the entity that was founded in 2021 and started operating last year seeks “to bring services closer to people, providing affordable healthcare services to the community.”

Bishop Ncube said that the establishment of laboratory services at the doorsteps of Catholic health facilities within the Diocese “will eliminate the need to look for laboratories elsewhere.”

The Bishop who has been at the helm of the Zimbabwean Diocese since his appointment in July 2021 urged the people of God under his pastoral care  “to embrace the services brought by the Church through Stella Mundi” for their benefit.
