The Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (CYON) in the Archdiocese of Abuja  is providing basic hygiene products to vulnerable girls in an initiative the Catholic entity has dubbed “Pad a Girl Child”.

Speaking to ACI Africa Wednesday, March 6 on the sidelines of the launch of the initiative, Ms Imotsu Valeria Kateoyemen, an official at CYON, said the initiative was launched in the spirit of the Lenten season, a time she said is marked by acts of compassion and generosity especially to the less privileged in society.

“We conceived the ‘Pad a Girl Child’ initiative because we discovered that young girls in the rural areas who are poor and marginalized could not afford to buy sanitary pads during their menstrual cycles because of the present economic situation of our country,” Ms Kateoyemen said at the launch that was conducted at the Junior Secondary School Waru, Abuja.

She noted that girls who can’t afford decent sanitary materials while on their period resort to using dirty rags which cause them multiple infections.

“Menstrual hygiene should be treated as the fundamental right of a girl child to receive free supplies of sanitary pads. This is why we decided to provide them with free pads,” Ms Kateoyemen said.

She added, “We started this initiative during the Lenten season in which one of the pillars is almsgiving, so that we can plant the seed of charity in the lives of these young girls and when they grow up they will also have the spirit of charity.”

“We believe that even after the Lenten season, we will continue to reach out to more girls in the rural communities. We started with 300 school girls today, and we hope to increase the number going forward,” Ms Kateoyemen said.

Ms Kateoyemen told ACI Africa that the impact of Pad a Girl Child” extends beyond the immediate distribution of sanitary pads.

The initiative, she said, seeks to foster a lasting change by promoting awareness and education around menstrual hygiene and addressing the needs of the most vulnerable, and contributing to the empowerment of young girls, enabling them to navigate their daily lives with dignity and confidence.

One of the beneficiaries, Jombo Esther Divine who spoke to ACI Africa expressed appreciation for the initiative and appealed that the boy child should also be involved in outreaches to help balance the society and make the boy child a better person.

“I am so happy today to receive this gift. Apart from the gift I have also been educated on the things I need to know about menstruation and menstrual cycle and this knowledge will help us in our schools and in our homes,” Ms Divine said.

She added, “I want to appeal to the organizers of this programme to also come up with a programme that will be targeted at the boy child so that issues concerning the boy child could also be addressed. I believe if this is done we will have a balanced society and harmonious living.”
