The Catholic Archdiocese Nampula in Mozambique is in solidarity with persons affected by floods in the Southern African nation, the Local Ordinary, Archbishop Inácio Saúre, has said.

In his Tuesday, March 26 anticipated Chrism Mass that is traditionally celebrated on Holy Thursday, Archbishop Saúre said, “Heavy rains caused a lot of suffering to various families and fellow citizens of ours here in the Archdiocese of Nampula, but also in almost the entire south of the country.”

“Many of these brothers and sisters of ours have lost much of what they had and are facing very difficult situations,” the Mozambican Catholic Archbishop noted during the Eucharistic celebration at Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral of his Metropolitan See.

He said, “I would like, on behalf of the Archdiocese, to express our solidarity with all the people and families who are going through painful and distressing times because of the floods.”

Archbishop Saúre invited the people of God under his pastoral care to reach out to those affected by the floods, saying, “We realize that at this difficult time, it is essential that we all show solidarity and charity in order to alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters.”

“This situation we are going through is due to a lack of care,” he said, and added, “With the principle of living the new humanity, redeemed and reconciled with God, my neighbour is everyone who needs me in various circumstances, not just because of the floods,” he said.

The Mozambican-born member of the Consolata Missionaries (IMC), who started his Episcopal Ministry in May 2011 as Bishop of Mozambique’s Tete Diocese emphasized the need to reach out to the flood victims, saying, “Let us live solidarity as a gift of love for our neighbour, as the Lord teaches us in the parable of the Good Samaritan.”

Turning his attention to members of the Clergy in his Metropolitan See, the Local Ordinary of Nampula Archdiocese expressed his awareness of the challenges that Priests ministering in Parishes face; he encouraged them to draw inspiration from Jesus Christ as they live the Easter Triduum.

“Despite the various difficulties and constraints that we may have in our parishes as Priests, it is important that we immerse ourselves in the Easter Triduum,” Archbishop Saúre said, and added, “It was this Triduum that served as the fulfillment of our Lent, in other words, it was because of this Triduum that there was a Lent.”

He reiterated, “In these three days, we are facing the elements of the life and mission of Jesus of Nazareth.”
