Archbishop Giovanni Gaspari, who has been representing the Holy Father in Angola and São Tomé & Príncipe since he was appointed in September 2020 has described as “very good” the collaboration between the Vatican and the two African nations.
Speaking to journalists after a farewell audience with Angola’s President, João Lourenço, Archbishop Gaspari said that he had come to the Presidential Palace to say goodbye and to thank the President of the Republic and the Angolan people for the collaboration he had witnessed in his diplomatic service.
“At this very moment, relations between the Holy See and the Angolan government are good, very good, because with Mr. President, we also addressed the issue of the Framework Agreement that was signed in 2019 and was implemented during my mandate here, with the delivery of the legal instruments, precisely those that serve to implement some of the most relevant articles of the Framework Agreement,” he said during the Monday, April 22 audience.
The member of the Clergy of Italy’s Archdiocese of Pescara-Penne, who is set to represent the Holy Father in Korea and Mongolia following his March 2 appointment reiterated, “In this sense, I can say that the relationship between the Republic of Angola and the Holy See is very good.”
He thanked Angolans for “great moments” spent in the country, and explained, “I received a unique and extraordinary welcome from this people in this country and this is a great value that is found in the roots of the culture of this people.”
