The Bishop of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Nakuru has advised parents not to hinder their children’s choice of vocation to religious life, noting that while parents are caregivers, their role does not include preventing their children from serving God.
In his homily on Friday, June 7, during the Eucharistic celebration for the burial of Sr. Mary Cecilia Waithira of the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi (LSOSF), Bishop Cleophas Oseso Tuka stated that children are gifts from God and parents should not hesitate to give them to serve Him in religious life.
“Many parents, at some point, unintentionally become obstacles in their children's relationship with God,” Bishop Oseso said in his homily during the event that took place at St. Augustine Parish, Bahati.
He said in trying to guide their children, parents may follow their plans, which can conflict with God's path and intentions for their children. He said, “While a parent's way might be flawed or misleading, God's way is always perfect.”
The Kenyan Bishop lauded the late Sr. Waithera for putting Christ at the center of her life, saying, “The late sister in her vocation acknowledged that only Christ is capable of leading her ways and that there was no other way.”
