Don’t Be Obstacles to Children’s Choice of Religious Life: Kenyan Bishop to Parents

The Bishop of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Nakuru has advised parents not to hinder their children’s choice of vocation to religious life, noting that while parents are caregivers, their role does not include preventing their children from serving God.

In his homily on Friday, June 7, during the Eucharistic celebration for the burial of Sr. Mary Cecilia Waithira of the Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi (LSOSF), Bishop Cleophas Oseso Tuka stated that children are gifts from God and parents should not hesitate to give them to serve Him in religious life.

“Many parents, at some point, unintentionally become obstacles in their children's relationship with God,” Bishop Oseso said in his homily during the event that took place at St. Augustine Parish, Bahati.

He said in trying to guide their children, parents may follow their plans, which can conflict with God's path and intentions for their children. He said, “While a parent's way might be flawed or misleading, God's way is always perfect.”

The Kenyan Bishop lauded the late Sr. Waithera for putting Christ at the center of her life, saying, “The late sister in her vocation acknowledged that only Christ is capable of leading her ways and that there was no other way.”

He underlined the need for those in religious life to remain faithful to their vocation, trusting and believing in Christ to direct their lives regardless of challenges which he said are mostly promoted by the devil.

“We have so many things trying to sway our ways in this journey of faith and also in our vocations and though our vocation to religious life has its challenges, we should not deviate from it,” Bishop Oseso said.

He added, “Sometimes the devil will come with his cunning ways trying to convince you that life at home is better than religious life in the convent, but the only home that we anticipate to go to is the heavenly home which Christ himself went to prepare for us.”

“Christ continues to tell us to keep believing in Him and God because He is the truth,” Bishop Oseso said, and added, “He taught the truth, His words were true and He was the truth Himself, these are qualities that cannot be found in any other human being.”

The 56-year-old Catholic Bishop who started his Episcopal Ministry in May last year said that it is only truth as contained in the person of Jesus Christ that is capable of guiding human beings in resurrection and salvation.

“Everything that Christ taught us was to direct us towards eternal life. Sometimes we twist God’s truth to suit our ways of life but we should know that divine truth cannot be changed,” he said, adding, “We should remain firm and hold on to this truth regardless of the life challenges.”
