Catechism of the Catholic Church Translated into Ibinda Language Ready for Use in Angola’s Cabinda Diocese

Bishop Belmiro Cuica Chissengueti of the Catholic Diocese of Cabinda in Angola

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cabinda in Angola has presented to the people of God in his Episcopal See the version of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) that was translated into Ibinda, a Bantu language widely spoken in Angola’s Cabinda Province.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony on Thursday, July 11, Bishop Belmiro Cuica Chissengueti said the translated CCC will help achieve linguistic unity in Cabinda Diocese.

“This Catechism has the particularity of being the identity card of the people of Cabinda,” Bishop Chissengueti said during the event that was held at the headquarters of the Bishops' Conference of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe (CEAST) in Luanda.

He added, “Ibinda is considered a popular language spoken in Cabinda. The Catechism is 166 pages long and will be a tool in the hands of Catechists to facilitate the teaching of Catholic doctrine.”

The Angolan member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Holy Ghost Fathers/Spiritans) said the translated version of CCC is “at the disposal of Catechists and communities to learn the essential elements of our Christian faith.”

“This catechism is also our starting point for the catechetical reform we're going to carry out in the Diocese,” he further said, and continued, “We've produced 1,000 copies and we're transporting them to Cabinda and making them available to our Catechists because when I visit the communities the Catechists' main concern is: we don't have the Catechism.”

The Catholic Bishop, who also serves as the president of the Episcopal Commission for Youth, University Ministry and Scouting of CEAST said the translated version of CCC will be officially launched in his Episcopal See in the days ahead.

Pope St. John Paul II  approved the CCC in French in June 1992 and promulgated it on 11 October 1992 through his Apostolic Constitution, Fidei depositum, on the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.

Five years later, on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Polish-born Pope approved and promulgated the “definitive text” of the Catechism in Latin through his Apostolic Letter, Laetamur Magnopere.

In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI promulgated the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a summary of CCC.
