Members of the Episcopal Conference of the Indian Ocean (CEDOI) have taken a commitment to foster their collegiality, journeying together in the spirit of the ongoing Synod on Synodality.
In a collective message following their 35th Plenary Assembly, which they issued on Wednesday, July 24, CEDOI members express gratitude to Pope Francis for “inviting us to become a synodal Church: walking together, in constant mission.”
“We give thanks to God for our predecessors who opened this path of walking together. It has enabled communion and collaboration between our Churches, bringing our people closer together,” they say in the statement issued after their July 17-24 Plenary Assembly.
The Catholic Church leaders in Comoros, Mauritius, Mayotte, and Reunion and Seychelles add, “Faced with the societal and ecclesial challenges facing these islands in the southwestern Indian Ocean, we see ourselves as heirs to the history of our Churches.”
“We commit to supporting each other fraternally as Bishops in the spirit of the Synod on Synodality which calls for communion, participation, and mission,” they say, referring to the theme of the multi-year initiative of Pope Francis, which he extended to 2024, with the first phase, 4-29 October 2023, having concluded with a 42-page summary report.
