“I shall build on the good work of my predecessors”, First-Ever Resident Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan

The recently appointed first-ever resident Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan is hoping to build his diplomatic service on the “good work” that other Vatican diplomats have accomplished in the East-Central African nation.

In a Thursday, July 25 letter addressed to the people of God in the country that gained independence from Sudan in July 2011, Mons. Séamus Patrick Horgan says he looks forward to traveling to the country and beginning his diplomatic service in August after his Episcopal Consecration scheduled for July 27 in Rome.

“I pray the presence of a resident Apostolic Nuncio will make more immediate the closeness of Pope Francis and will reinforce the bonds of fraternity and love between the local churches of Sudan and the Universal Church,” Mons. Horgan says in the one-page letter.

The Irish-born Vatican diplomat says he hopes to build his service in South Sudan “on the good work of my predecessors as Nuncio and of the Chargés who have done so much to establish a solid presence for the Holy See in South Sudan.”

Referring to the first-ever Papal visit to South Sudan in February last year, he also hopes to “build on, and gather the fruits of, the Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis in 2023 and of his various initiatives in favor of peace.”

South Sudan has been served by the Kenya-based Apostolic Nuncio in collaboration with a Charge d’Affaire based at the country’s Apostolic Nunciature in Juba.

Set to become the first-ever resident Apostolic Nuncio in South Sudan, Mons. Horgan is a native of Ireland, where he was born in the Catholic Diocese of Killaloe in August 1969.

He was ordained a Priest in June 1994 after completing his Priestly studies and formation.

The graduate in Canon Law from the Rome-based Pontifical Gregorian University, who speaks French, English, Italian, and German entered the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, the Holy See's diplomatic service, in July 2005.

Since then, the Vatican diplomat has served in various Apostolic Nunciatures, including Uganda, Switzerland, and the Philippines, and at the Section for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Secretariat of State. He has been serving as Counsellor at the Apostolic Nunciature in the U.S.

More in Africa

In his July 25 letter to the people of God in South Sudan, Mons. Horgan, who has been assigned the Titular See of Árd Sratha says that the Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Cardinal Parolin, will preside over his Episcopal Consecration on Saturday, July 27 in Rome.

“Please know that I shall have the Church in South Sudan in my prayers on that day and indeed during these weeks as I prepare to travel to Juba. I look forward to beginning my work among you in August,” he adds.
