At the conclusion of the National Jubilee Year of Catholic Youths, Bishop Ildo Augusto dos Santos Lopes Fortes of Cape Verde’s Catholic Diocese of Mindelo has urged young people to be living witnesses of God's love in their daily lives.

In his remarks at the concluding Mass of the event, Bishop dos Santos urged the youth to continue participating in the Eucharist and practicing charity in their communities.

“Be a witness of God's love wherever you are, and remember that Christ never sent His disciples out alone,” the Catholic Bishop said on Sunday, August 11 at the National Stadium in Cape Verde.

He added, “Don't wait for tomorrow. The person you meet today, whether a colleague, classmate, or neighbor, may be the one who needs your help.”

who has been at the helm of Mindelo Diocese since his Episcopal Ordination in April 2011 urged young people to “value the richness of being part of the Church of our Lord Jesus.”

He underscored the importance of such large gatherings for young people, saying, “These events, like World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, and now this Cape Verdean Youth Jubilee, are vital because they remind us that we are not alone. They strengthen the faith of young people.”

Bishop Fortes advocated for a more dynamic youth ministry that extends beyond meetings and actively engages with those in need.

“Our youth ministry needs to be more outward-looking. We strengthen our faith when we step out, face challenges, and seek guidance from God's Word,” he said.

The August 4-12 celebration is part of activities marking the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Santiago and the celebration of the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year.

In his homily during the August 11 closing Mass, Arlindo Cardinal Gomes Furtado called on young people in attendance to share their experiences with their peers.

“We cannot end an intense week of activities and leave it at that. It must continue in the hearts and lives of each individual, in every group, parish, Diocese, the Church, and the world,” Cardinal Furtado said.

He added, “Cape Verdeans are everywhere, so I urge you to carry the Good News wherever you go.”

Cardinal Furtado noted that this mission is given by God, and the youth should feel proud to be instructed and sent by Him.

“This is not just any mission; it's a divine instruction. We all have a responsibility to develop the talents God has given us,” he said.

The Cape Verdean Cardinal went on to caution against complacency, saying, “If we don't work to develop our talents, we risk becoming like the unproductive servant that Jesus condemned as wicked and lazy, which is incompatible with our identity as children of God.”

Cardinal Furtado also highlighted the need for those called to be children of God to organize their lives and behavior according to high ethical standards.

“As we are called to be in the likeness and image of God, we must live as Christians, as bearers of Jesus. Our behavior should be guided by values like truth, justice, honesty, transparency, generosity, kindness, responsibility, and respect for others.” he said.
