“Great delight”: President of Malawi on Encounter with Pope Francis in Rome

The President of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera, has described his Monday, August 19 audience with Pope Francis at the Apostolic Place in Rome as a “great delight”.

In a Facebook post shortly after the encounter, President Chakwera stated that he used the meeting to “commend Pope Francis for his leadership in matters of global concern, such as climate change and rising economic inequality, advocating for partnership between the two States.”

“In my historic and official visit to Rome, I have met with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. During the homely meeting, we discussed the progress of bilateral relations between Malawi and the Holy See, drawing on rich historical ties between our two States,” the Malawian President said.

President Chakwera said he conveyed to “His Holiness the Pope my great delight in having an audience with him.”

“I did say that I had come not only representing the Malawian people, a significant portion of which are Catholics, but also as a student and disciple, eager to continue learning about servant-leadership that puts the needs of the people first,” he further stated.

On a personal note, President Chakwera conveyed his sadness and offered condolences to Pope Francis on the recent passing of former Malawian Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, whom the Pope had met in 2016.

He described Dr. Chilima as “a devout Catholic and a source of inspiration for millions of Malawians.”

The Malawian President also thanked the Pope for the “exceptional leadership and ministry of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) in shepherding Malawians through the daze of shock, grief, and confusion that followed the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Dr. Chilima.”

President Chakwera said Pope Francis offered his blessing to the people of Malawi, pledging “support for and solidarity with Malawi's quest for greater prosperity and peace.”

In a statement issued following the audience, the Holy See Press Office says President Chakwera “subsequently met with His Eminence Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, accompanied by His Excellency Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.”

“The conversation continued with an exchange of opinions on regional and international issues, emphasizing the importance of promoting dialogue and reconciliation among peoples,” the statement further reads.

Following tradition, Pope Francis and President Chakwera of Malawi exchanged gifts during their meeting.

The Pope presented President Chakwera with a bronze casting that featured two hands shaking, along with a woman holding a child, a migrant ship, and the inscription, "Let's fill our hands with other hands," with St. Peter's colonnade in the background.

Additionally, Pope Francis gave the President a copy of his 2024 Message for Peace and a book on the 2020 "Statio Orbis," published by the Vatican Publishing House (LEV).

In return, President Chakwera gifted the Holy Father a wooden relief of Malawi's map, crafted by local artisans, depicting the Southern African country's main cities and native animals.
