The President of Catholic Priests in Sierra Leone has eulogized Fr. Gustavo Gutiérrez Merino, considered the “Father of Liberation Theology,” for his contribution to Theology, which he says influenced him and others while in the Major Seminary.

In his tribute to the late Peruvian Dominican Priest, who died on October 22, Fr. Peter Konteh described him as “a towering figure in the realm of theology” who had had “a profound influence” on countless individuals, “including many of us when we were seminarians.”

“Father Gutiérrez’s passing marks the loss of a visionary whose contributions to liberation theology have reshaped our understanding of faith and justice,” Fr. Konteh said in the tribute he published on his Facebook page on Wednesday, October 23.

The Dominican Province of St. John the Baptist of Peru announced the death of Fr. Gutiérrez who died at the age of 96, noting that he was the author of the influential 1971 book “A Theology of Liberation: History, Politics and Salvation.”

“We ask for your prayers to accompany our dear brother so that he may enjoy eternal life,” stated the announcement.

In his tribute, Fr. Konteh said that the late Gutiérrez’s seminal work based on his liberal theology book “illuminated the path for those who believe in the transformative power of faith to address the struggles of the marginalized.”

The Sierra Leonean Catholic Priest who is the Executive Director of Caritas Freetown said that the late Peruvian Priest, through his book, taught him, and other seminarians to advocate for the poor and to challenge the injustices that affect societies rather than solely focusing on spiritual reflection.

“His emphasis on the preferential option for the poor has inspired a generation to engage deeply with the lived experiences of those on the margins,” Fr. Konteh said.

The member of the Clergy of the Archdiocese of Freetown said during his seminary life, he found “a powerful affirmation of our vocation to serve, to listen, and to act” in the writings of the late Fr. Gutiérrez.

“Gutiérrez's insights encouraged us to see the connection between our faith and the pressing social issues around us,” Fr. Konteh said, and added, “He reminded us that true discipleship entails a commitment to justice and solidarity.”

The award-winning Catholic Priest said that the late Peruvian Priest was also a compassionate mentor and a beacon of hope, virtues he said transcended his theological insights and work.

Fr. Konteh said, “His humility and dedication to the cause of the poor serve as a lasting example for all of us. As we reflect on his life, let us honor his legacy by continuing to strive for justice, uplift the voices of the marginalized, and foster a world where faith and action go hand in hand.”

Praying for the repose of the soul of the Peruvian Priest, Fr. Konteh said, “May his spirit inspire us to live out the principles he championed. We are grateful for the profound impact he had on our lives and the lives of many others, and we will carry his teachings in our hearts as we continue our journeys of faith and service.”

Meanwhile, the Dominicans have announced that Fr. Gutiérrez’s remains will lie in state at the Santo Domingo convent in Lima.
