Church’s Global Mission in Need of “more” Dedicated Clergy, Consecrated: Divine Word Missionaries Provincial in Angola

There is need for more and more Clergy and women and men Religious to participate in the worldwide mission of the Church, the Provincial Superior of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) in Angola has said.

In his homily during the closing Mass of the November 5-6 Provincial Assembly of the SVD members in Angola, Fr. Nelson Manuel Hebo underscored the Church’s need for dedicated personnel, willing to be at the service of the Lord.

“The mission needs more laborers. We need more Priests, missionaries, and Religious people willing to dedicate themselves to Consecrated Life and to serve the Lord,” Fr. Hebo said during the Wednesday, November 6 Eucharistic celebration that was held at the SVD Provincial House in Terra Nova in Luanda.

To realize this need, “vocation animation is essential”, the Angolan Provincial Superior of the SVD, also referred to as Divine Word Missionaries, said.

He challenged the SVD members in Angola to recognize the universal nature of their calling as missionaries.

“As missionaries of God’s Kingdom, we are all builders of this Kingdom. Our mission is global, knowing no boundaries, and calls us to witness the living God everywhere,” Fr. Hebo said.

Missionaries, he went on to say, “whether in their homeland or in areas they are called to serve, have a role in spreading the Gospel and manifesting God’s presence among people.”

The SVD Provincial Superior called for spiritual solidarity and other forms of support in the preparation of missionaries for the global mission of the Church.

“The task is great, and the path is long. We need everyone’s prayers, support, and love to enable Seminarians and future missionaries to continue the mission,” Fr. Hebo said at the conclusion of the SVD Provincial Assembly that also marked the 30th anniversary of the Divine Word Missionary Seminary in Angola.

He described the SVD Seminary as a place, where missionaries are prepared “to be witnesses of the Incarnate Word.”

“Here, we learn to follow Jesus Christ, adhere to the teachings of the Society of the Divine Word, and prepare to be witnesses of the Incarnate Word,” Fr. Hebo said, adding, “This formation process equips us to offer genuine service to God and others as missionaries of His Kingdom.”

He recognized the tradition of fostering interactions with local community members at the Seminary, saying, “Over the years, we have always sought to open the Seminary’s doors, welcome the surrounding communities, and share the word of God with those around us.”

“We must not be selfish with the word of God,” he said to underscore the SVD Seminary culture to interact with members of the local community.

The mission of the Church, the SVD Provincial Superior said, “is not only for Priests or Religious but for all Christians, who, alongside missionaries, contribute to evangelization.”

He reiterated the need for spiritual solidarity in the promotion of vocations to missionary life.

“Let us continue to ask the Lord, with His Spirit, to help us remain faithful collaborators in His mission, a mission that is often challenging but worthwhile; it is worth continuing on this path of service and testimony of Jesus Christ,” the SVD Provincial Superior in Angola said during the November 6 Eucharistic celebration.
