Vicar Delegate of Meki Apostolic Vicariate in Ethiopia Appointed Bishop for Country’s Awasa Vicariate

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Gobezayehu Getachew Yilma who has been serving as Vicar Delegate of Ethiopia’s Apostolic Vicariate of Meki and Executive Director of the Diocesan Caritas as the new Bishop for the country’s Apostolic Vicariate of Awasa.

The appointment of Mons. Getachew as Local Ordinary the Ethiopian Apostolic Vicariate that has been under the pastoral care of the 80-year-old Spanish-born Comboni Missionary (MCCJ) Priest, Fr. Juan González Núñez as Apostolic Administrator, was made public on Friday, November 15, and published by the Holy See Press Office.

Awasa Apostolic Vicariate became vacant in September following the transfer of Bishop Roberto Bergamaschi, who had been at the helm of the Vicariate since June 2016 to the Apostolic Vicariate of Gambella.

Mons. Getachew, who will turn 46 on December 4 was born in Dodola, Oromia Region in the Horn of Africa nation. He was ordained a Priest of Meki Apostolic Vicariate on 16 January 2005 after completing his Priestly studies from the Capuchin Franciscan Institute in the country’s Addis Ababa Catholic Archdiocese.

The Bishop-elect, who holds a diploma in philosophy and a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome had also pursued higher education in agronomy at Jimma University of Agriculture.

Mons. Getachew pursued his further studies in Ireland, earning a master’s degree in development studies and a Doctorate in Theology with a focus on Catholic Social Teaching from the Maynooth-based St. Patrick’s Pontifical University.

As a Priest, the member of Clergy of the Apostolic Vicariate of Meki has served in various capacities, including Secretary to the Vicar Apostolic of Meki, Youth Coordinator, and General Secretary of the Meki Catholic Secretariat.

Since 2016, he has been serving as the Vicar Delegate of the Apostolic Vicariate of Meki and the Executive Director of Caritas Meki.

Once Consecrated Bishop, Mons. Getachew will become the 5th Bishop of the Vicariate in the Horn of Africa nation that was erected on 25 March 1937 as Prefecture Apostolic of Neghelli before being elevated to its current state in October 1969.

He will be succeeding three Italian-born Comboni Missionaries and their Salesian compatriot, the latter transferred to Gambella Apostolic Vicariate.
