Catholic Bishops in North Africa have decried the ongoing conflicts in the Holy Land and across Africa, emphasizing that war is a failure of peace and violence only deepens suffering.
In their Advent message issued Tuesday, November 26, members of the Regional Episcopal Conferences of North Africa (CERNA) call for an end to hostilities, urging leaders to seek justice and reconciliation.
“At the beginning of this Advent season, we turn our thoughts painfully to the land where Jesus was born, grew up, spoke words of justice and peace, gave His life for all humanity, and rose again,” CERNA members say.
They lament, “This land has been torn apart for over a year by a conflict bringing with it a trail of victims, displaced persons, and massive destruction. An entire population is held hostage, deprived of care and food, and day by day, this conflict becomes normalized in indifference, just as is the case with many other conflicts in Africa, Europe, and various places worldwide.”
“War is never a means to peace. It is its failure. Violence is never the answer to suffering; it amplifies it,” CERNA members say.
