Religious Leaders in Mauritius Urge New Government to Address Country’s Pressing Challenges

Religious leaders in Mauritius, an island on the Indian Ocean, have called on the country’s newly elected government, led by Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam to take action in addressing the nation's key challenges and to work towards the development of the Mauritian citizens.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 25, members of the Council of Religions (CoR) in Mauritius extended their “heartfelt congratulations” to the newly appointed Prime Minister, ministers, and members of Parliament, wishing them success in their mission to lead the nation toward continued development and prosperity.

“We sincerely hope that the Mauritian nation will continue to develop under your leadership,” the Church leaders said.

They added, “Efforts are therefore required from our political leaders, together with civil society, to implement the necessary reforms to address the nation’s current challenges.”

“These include achieving food self-sufficiency based on a resilient and sustainable economic model, fostering the interdependence of capital and labor, and, importantly, developing an education system that supports the holistic development of the Mauritian citizen—not just materially, but even more so spiritually and morally,” the Bishops said.

The members of the Council of Religions in Mauritius note that “it is now recognized that a balanced education from an early age could, over time, resolve many of the social issues we face today.”

“We note the importance of fostering intercultural understanding and promoting a sense of Mauritian identity (“Mauricianité”) as essential components of nation-building, maintaining peace, and ensuring unity in our diverse society,” the religious leaders say.

They note that “the Council of Religions could, in an advisory capacity, contribute to this national transformation effort, helping to guide our Republic toward new horizons for the material and spiritual progress of all our fellow citizens.”

In their message, the religious leaders emphasize the role of the diverse religions in Mauritius as a unifying force, which they say can strengthen friendship and fraternity among citizens while contributing to the country’s material and governance progress.

“It is undeniable that the various religions in Mauritius represent a spiritual asset upon which we can rely—first, to strengthen the bonds of friendship and fraternity among our fellow citizens, and second, to advance the country materially and in terms of good governance,” CoR members say.

They add, “We must collectively turn our backs on fanaticism, wherever it may arise. Specifically, as the Council of Religions, we have a duty to invite elected officials to seriously examine the challenges that lie ahead.”
