Catholic Activists in Africa Want Nigeria’s Ministers Working with Pro-Abortion Organizations Dismissed

Catholic activists under their umbrella organization, CitizenGO Africa, are calling upon Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to dismiss the country’s health ministers, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad and Dr. Osagie Ehanire, for teaming up with abortion-promoting organizations in the West African country.

In their Monday, December 2 petition, the activists accuse the ministers of collaborating with international organizations promoting abortion, a situation they say undermines Nigeria’s pro-life stance and moral foundation.

“We demand that President Tinubu take immediate action to fire Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad and Dr. Osagie Ehanire,” they said, and added, “These ministers have aligned themselves with an agenda that seeks to strip Nigeria of its pro-life identity, prioritizing foreign interests over the lives of Nigerian children.”

The Catholic activists criticized the health ministers for failing to uphold their constitutional and ethical responsibilities to protect life, saying, “By collaborating with abortion-promoting organizations, Dr. Muhammad and Dr. Ehanire have betrayed their duty and proven themselves unfit to lead.”

In the petition addressed to President Tinubu, the activists alleged that through the ministers' collaboration with abortion-promoting organizations, the Department for Health Promotion was working to legalize abortion, a move they described as a direct threat to the lives of unborn children and the nation’s values.

They highlighted the involvement of organizations such as the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and IPAS, accusing them of exerting undue influence on Nigerian officials to adopt policies that favor abortion.

The Catholic Activists said, “Foreign organizations with anti-life agendas are manipulating the system, and key government officials are complicit in their efforts.”

They warned that legalizing abortion in Nigeria would lead to the devaluation of human life and a deterioration of the nation’s moral fabric.

The activists argued that abortion is not a solution to Nigeria’s challenges. Instead, they said, it is a vice that threatens the lives of unborn children, one that causes emotional and physical harm to women, eroding the future of the nation. The CitizenGo activists proposed improved maternal healthcare and life-affirming solutions to support women in the country.

Calling on President Tinubu to take immediate action to remove the two ministers from office, the activists said, “Their actions are  affront to the pro-life stance held by the majority of Nigerians. Their continued presence in government is intolerable.”

The activists emphasized that the fight is about safeguarding the sanctity of life and resisting external pressures from organizations pushing an abortion agenda. They urged Nigeria to focus on protecting life and ensuring that the nation remains a symbol of hope and respect for human dignity.

In their petition, CitizenGo officials warned about the urgency of the matter, stating, “Every delay brings us closer to a future where the sanctity of life is devalued, and abortion becomes normalized.”
