Christian Human Rights Foundation Condemns Attack on Sudanese Mosque that Killed Seven

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a UK-based human rights foundation, has condemned continued targeting of places of worship as war rages on in Sudan following the reported December 6 attack on a Mosque in the country’s capital, Khartoum, that is the epicentre of fighting.

Consistent with Agence France Press (AFP) December 6 report, CSW’s December 12 statement confirms that the airstrike on the Sheikh Elsidiq Mosque in Shambat, Khartoum North, killed seven people who were just coming from their Friday (December 6) noon prayers.

The attack by the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) who are in conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) also left several other worshippers injured.

In the December statement, CSW’s Founder President, Mervyn Thomas, condemns what he describes as the trend to “intentionally and systematically” attack civilians in Sudan.

According to Mervyn, attacks on places of worship where civilians are seeking refuge further seek refuge constitute “severe breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law”.

“These recent attacks by the SAF and RSF show how both forces continue to intentionally and systematically target civilians,” the CSW official is quoted as saying.

He adds, “Attacks on places of worship where civilians are gathered and seek refuge ... must be documented thoroughly by international bodies, including the UN Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan.”

CSW reports that the December 6 attack is not the first time that places of worship have been targeted in the Sudan civil war that broke out on 15 April 2023

In November 2023, the largest church in Omdurman was bombed by the SAF, while the RSF, according to CSW, “has repeatedly attacked churches.”

In March 2024, an SAF-affiliated Islamist militia detonated explosives inside a mosque, also in Omdurman.

On October 20, the SAF dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on the Sheikh El Jeili Mosque in Wad Madani, Gezira State, after evening prayers, killing at least 15 people and injuring over 30.

SAF warplanes also killed at least 80 people in Kabkabiya, North Darfur, on December 9.

Meanwhile, the RSF has continued its shelling attacks on North Omdurman, one of the safest areas in Khartoum to which many civilians have fled from RSF-controlled areas.

CSW reports that at least 70 people were killed in separate shelling attacks on December 10 alone. The RSF also reportedly burned approximately 3,000 houses in 18 villages in Kutom, North Darfur, in November.

In the December 12 report, CSW’s President advocates for “immediate ceasefire” and “peace negotiations”.

Mervyn says, “CSW continues to call on the warring parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire and to engage in peace negotiations with a view to bringing an end to Sudan’s severe human rights and humanitarian crisis.”
