As the Catholic Church in Ethiopia begins her Advent Season 2024, members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia (CBCE) are calling on the people of God in the Horn of Africa nation to seek inspiration from the “King of Peace” and work towards peaceful coexistence.

In their collective message dated December 19, CBCE members say, “As we enter this holy season of Advent, preparing ourselves and getting ready to welcome our Lord Jesus Christ in our hearts, we greet you with great joy and anticipation.”

“Advent reminds us God’s infinite love, hope and his promise for the everlasting peace to all human beings brought by the birth of Jesus Christ to a world often overshowed by conflict, suffering, and despair,” they add in their Advent 2024 message addressed to “All Catholic Clergy, Religious men and women, Laity and youth and all people of good will”.

They lament about the security situation in sections of the Horn of Africa nation, saying, “The lack of peace, in some areas of our country, has also impacted our pastoral ministries. Many of our parishes are inaccessible, and some have been forced to close.”

“Our institutions, including clinics, schools, and pastoral centers, have been devastated, and church personnel have had to work in situations of insecurity, and some had to leave due to threats and insecurity,” Ethiopia’s Catholic Bishops further lament.

They look to the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ as pivotal. CBCE members say, “The king of peace invites us to lay aside the tools of war, destruction, division, and hatred and engage towards building peace, justice, and unity among all people.”

“As we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s birth, let us commit to being peacemakers in our own lives,” CBCE members emphasize in the collective message following their five-day 57th annual Ordinary Assembly held at the Consolata Missionaries retreat centre in Mojo in the Oromia region, central Ethiopia, that concluded on December 13.

They share about the interconnectedness of mission, joy, peace, and justice, and citing Amos 5:24, say, “Let justice surge like waters, and righteousness like an unfailing stream.”

“Let us embody the spirit of Christ by extending love and compassion to those around us, especially to those who suffer,” CBCE members say in their statement also posted on Facebook on December 20.

“As we light the candles of hope, peace, joy, and love during Advent, let us hold space for those who grieve, those who have lost loved ones, and those who live in fear of what tomorrow may bring,” they say in their December 19 message at the start of the Advent Season in Ethiopia.

Referring to the highlighted challenges, CBCE members say that “the message of Advent urges us to confront these harsh realities with honesty and compassion.”

“We appeal to our leaders, religious, politicians, economists, and society to prioritize dialogue, justice, and peace. True leadership is shown in listening, in seeking truth, and in working tirelessly for the common good,” they say.

Ethiopia’s Catholic Bishops go on to laud ongoing efforts to facilitate dialogue between parties in conflict in the Horn of Africa nation and emphasize the need for forgiveness and reconciliation to become hallmarks of daily life.

They invite the people of God in Ethiopia to reflect on God’s infinite love and the promise of everlasting peace brought by Jesus Christ.

“May the light of Christ shine brightly in our lives and guide us as we seek to bring hope and healing to those wounded emotionally and psychologically. With God’s grace may our nation shine as a beacon of hope, peace, and unity,” CBCE members implore in their December 19 statement at the start of the Advent Season in Ethiopia.
