Members of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) have lauded the country’s National Elections Security Task Force (NESTF) for demonstrating professionalism during the 2024 electioneering period in the country.

“As a nation committed to democratic values and the peaceful exercise of political rights, the importance of ensuring the security of citizens, electoral officials, and the integrity of the electoral process cannot be overstated,” GCBC members say in their December 19 statement.

They acknowledge with appreciation “the NESTF's dedication and professional handling of security measures throughout this election period” adding that the commitment and professionalism of the agents of the task force “has been invaluable in maintaining peace and stability across the country.”

“Your efforts in mitigating threats, maintaining order at polling stations, and ensuring the safety of voters and officials have significantly contributed to the credibility of the process,” the Catholic Church leaders say in the one-page statement that their president, Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of Ghana’s Sunyani Catholic Diocese, signed.

"With your diligence, our democracy will thrive, and Ghana will remain a model of peaceful electoral processes in the region," they say.

Ghana’s Catholic Bishops thank agents of NESTF for their commitment to peace, security, and the rule of law, saying, “May God bless all members of the National Elections Security Task Force and guide you in your continued service to our nation.”

There were some isolated incidents of vandalism and violence, GCBC members note, but acknowledge NESTF's role in creating a safe environment that allowed Ghanaians to vote with confidence, free from fear or intimidation.

They commend the task force’s collaboration with the Electoral Commission, political parties, civil society organizations, and the public “to uphold peace and foster mutual respect among all parties involved.”

The Catholic Church leaders call upon security agents in the West African nation to remain vigilant and deal decisively with individuals involved in violence, regardless of their political affiliations.

"Justice must be served," GCBC members say, and call for the protection of citizens and property.

They reiterate the call for spiritual solidarity towards post-election peaceful coexistence in the country, saying, “The Catholic Church continues to pray for lasting peace, unity, and stability in Ghana as we move beyond the elections into the next phase of governance.”
