Sierra Leone’s proposed Bill that is dubbed “Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Care Act 2024” should be rejected, Bishop Bob John Hassan Koroma of the country’s Catholic Diocese of Makeni has told Legislators of the West African nation.

In his Christmas 2024 message issued on December 24, Bishop Koroma weighs in on the proposed Bill, whose proponents claim seeks to “provide for safe motherhood and reproductive health care throughout Sierra Leone”, including setting “the standards of sexual and reproductive health care” in the country.

In a December 15 meeting seeking support for the Bill that had participation from Marie Stopes, a pro-abortion international organization, proponents also said that the Bill will “provide for the right to make decisions regarding safe motherhood and reproductive health and to provide for other related matters.”

The proponents, among other justifications for the proposed bill, also want mechanisms put in place to enhance access to “family planning” in the country.

In his Christmas 2024 message, Bishop Koroma adds his personal voice to that of the members of Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL), who, in a statement shared with ACI Africa on December 20, alongside faulting the use of certain phrases in the proposed Bill, including “family planning” and “sexual and reproductive health service”, said that the Bill “gravely” contradicts religious teachings in the country and that the Bill is “clearly forbidden”.

Bishop Koroma reflects on the inconsistency of celebrating the birth of Christ while entertaining legislation that undermines the sanctity of life.

“This, in our estimation as Catholics, is a subtle way of legalizing the unspeakable crime of abortion in this country – an act diametrically opposed to the very essence of what we celebrate at this time, namely, the birth of the Baby Jesus,” he says.

The Sierra Leonean Catholic Bishop calls upon all “religiously minded” Legislators and others “of goodwill” to oppose the bill.

“I, together with my brother Bishops, call on all religiously minded Parliamentarians and Parliamentarians of goodwill, capable of distinguishing between good and evil, to vote categorically against that bill,” he emphasizes.

Bishop Koroma refers to the Catholic Church’s stance on the sanctity of life, and cites St. John Paul II’s March 1995 Encyclical on the value and inviolability of Human Life, Evangelium Vitae (Gospel of Life) that describes abortion as “a crime which violates the integrity of the human person, insults human dignity, poisons human society, and is a dishonor to the Creator.”

“The first among the rights of any human person is his or her right to life,” the 53-year-old Catholic Church leader, who has been at the helm of Makeni Diocese since he started his Episcopal Ministry in May 2023 emphasizes.

In his Christmas 2024 message, Bishop Koroma extends his Christmas blessings to the people of God under his pastoral care, praying for peace, hope, and God’s abundant graces during the 2025 Jubilee Year.

“I prayerfully wish you and your families, both home and abroad, a grace-filled and joyous Christmas and a brighter New Year 2025 filled with God's abundant blessings of peace and renewed hope!”, he implores.
