Senegalese Spiritan Priest Appointed National Director of Pontifical Mission Societies in Indian Ocean Region

The pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle has appointed Fr. Moïse Lalty Diatta as the National Director of Pontifical Mission Societies in the Indian Ocean region that encompasses various island nations and territories.

The appointment of Fr. Diatta of the Missionary Society of the Holy Spirit under the Protection of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Spiritans), who is set to serve for five years was made public on Tuesday, January 7, and published by the Information service of Propaganda Fide, Agenzia Fides on Wednesday, January 9.

The 53-year-old Priest who was born in Kaonè, Senegal was ordained a Priest in 2002 after completing his philosophical and theological studies.

In the same year, Fr. Diatta was appointed vicar of the parish of St. Jean in Kataco in Guinea Conakry, from where he was assigned to the parish of St. Joseph in Boffa where he served for four years.

He then served as treasurer of the Order's province of North-East Africa and at the same time as Parish Priest of the parish of St. Christophe in Yoff Senegal for 10 years.

Since 2016 he has also been in charge of the parish of Grand Anse in Praslin, and from 2019 to 2022 he was appointed first assistant of the Spiritans.

From 2023 he has been serving as the parish Priest of St Therese of the Child Jesus in Plaisance in Mahé.

In the Indian Ocean region, PMS plays a vital role in promoting evangelization and supporting local churches. Their efforts are centered on assisting local churches in spreading the Gospel message, thereby fostering a deeper understanding and acceptance of the Christian faith.

Additionally, the pontifical society provides both material and spiritual aid to communities in need, ensuring that those who are underserved receive the resources necessary for their well-being and spiritual growth.

The PMS also focuses on promoting vocations by encouraging and supporting individuals who feel called to pursue religious life. Through these initiatives, the Pontifical Mission Societies contribute significantly to the growth and strengthening of the Catholic Church in this diverse and culturally rich region.
