The Chairperson of the National Catholic Board of Education in South Africa has expressed optimism that Catholic-sponsored schools in the country will inspire hope in providing faith-based education during the Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year.

In a video message published on Tuesday, January 14 as the country ushered in the 2025 new academic year, Fr. Hugh O'Connor addressed the challenges that the country's education system is facing and emphasized the need for faith-based learning institutions to inspire hope in learners, fostering both academic excellence and personal growth.

“This year, 2025, is the Jubilee Year. The theme of this Jubilee Year is Pilgrims of Hope. Within our South African educational system, there are many reasons and many signs to have hope that education is important for all children and for our entire nation,” Fr. O’Connor said.

He added, “This year, we hope that our schools will be beacons of hope, providing good education, faith-based education, and safe spaces for our learners and educators, so that they may seek and strive for academic excellence in a balanced, loving, and caring environment.”

“The safety of our learners is paramount, and once again, one of the signs of tremendous hope in a country where we experience so much violence and where there is so much disappointment in relationships,” said Fr. O’Connor who is also the Secretary General of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC).

Through efforts to implement a child safeguarding policy aimed at keeping all school grounds, especially learners, safe, the priest said, “We have hope that we may become beacons of hope and safety in communities that are facing struggle and distress.”

Pope Francis officially launched the 2025 Jubilee Year just before Holy Mass on the Eve of Christmas 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Earlier, in announcing the start of a Year of Prayer on 21 January 2024 in preparation for the Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, the second in his Pontificate after the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015, the Holy Father said that the 2025 Jubilee Year will be “a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer in one’s personal life, in the life of the Church, and in the world.”

On the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ on 9 May 2024, Pope Francis solemnly proclaimed the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025 at a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica, during which he delivered the Bull of Induction of the planned Jubilee, “Spes non confundit” (Hope does not disappoint).

In another video on January 14, Fr. O’Connor acknowledged with appreciation the support of those involved in South Africa’s Catholic education network, including those in leadership positions, educators, support staff teachers, and learners.

While expressing gratitude to the students who sat for their national exams in 2024, the SACBC official welcomed the class of 2025, encouraging them to embrace new beginnings marked by dedication and hard work.

In addition, Fr. O’Connor congratulated the class of 2024 for their hard work and achievements and went on to appreciate their parents, saying, “We thank them for sending their children to our schools, and we give thanks to God for all the hard work that has gone in during the past year.”

“We wish our matric class of 2025 everything of the best in this important year. Remember, it is not all about studying; it is about having a balanced life. Part of having a balanced life is also remembering that God is a part of our lives and of our stories,” he said.
