Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have urged the country's government to renew its “commitment to safeguarding human life,” following the Tuesday, February 4 fire incident at an Islamic school in the Zamfara State that led to the death of 17.

The Police in Zamfara reportedly confirmed the death of 17 Almajiris (street urchins) in the fire incident that occurred in  Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, leaving 17 others injured.

In their Thursday, February 6 statement, the members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) commiserated with the victims of the incident, saying the deaths could have been avoided if the government had invested in safety measures.

“It is our collective duty to take immediate action to protect the sanctity of human life in our nation, recognizing that every life is sacred and deserves to be safeguarded,” the Bishops said in the one-page statement.

Extending their “heartfelt condolences” to the families of the victims, and all Nigerians affected by the tragedy, the Bishops added, “At all times, in all places, and by all means, the sacredness of human life must be defended and protected.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time of unimaginable pain, asking for God’s comfort and strength to sustain you,” the Bishops said and expressed prayers for the recovery of those injured, emphasizing trust in “God’s healing presence.”

In the statement that Fr. Michael Ayanleke Banjo, Secretary General of CBCN, and Fr. Michael Nsikak Umoh, Director of Social Communications, cosigned, the Bishops called for a “renewed commitment to safeguarding human life,” citing the frequency of preventable tragedies.

The Bishops found it regrettable that the West African nation is still grappling with deficiencies in fire safety measures and response mechanisms.

“It is disheartening to acknowledge that we have witnessed too many avoidable deaths, especially due to the lack of proper safety standards,” they said  noting that fire services are often “not available, non-functional, or ill-equipped to respond effectively to such emergencies.”

The Bishops further urged the government and stakeholders to enforce stringent safety standards in schools to prevent such incidences from recurring in the future.

“We urgently call on the government and relevant stakeholders to enforce stringent safety standards and to ensure that schools across all sectors are adequately fitted with safety measures to prevent the occurrence of such devastating incidents in the future and ensure that no life is lost due to avoidable negligence,” the Bishops said in the February 6 statement.
