Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza of Nigeria’s Catholic Diocese of Yola has emphasized the need for Priests to strive for “holy” and “exemplary lives” in the course of their Priestly ministry.

In his homily during the Priestly Ordination of four Deacons, Bishop Mamza told the Priests-elect, “You are expected to live a life of holiness because the Lord God says, ‘Be holy, for I am holy’. If God wants ordinary people to be holy, how much more should Priests strive for holiness?”

“It is my hope and prayer that you add value to the proclamation of the message of Christ and the work of evangelization, which is what we are doing here in the Diocese,” he said during the March 1 Ordination of Deacon John Peter Yaban, Deacon Joseph Hyginus, Deacon Robinson Bernard Gutaro, and Deacon Godwin Ibrahim Clement to the Priesthood.

The Local Ordinary of Yola Diocese called upon the four Priests-elect to strive to lead by example, and urged the Clergy ministering in his Episcopal See to live a life of virtue, dedication, and commitment.

“My call to all Priests in the Diocese of Yola is for them to be holy, to live exemplary lives, and to dedicate enough time to serving the people of God,” he emphasized during the Ordination celebration at St. Theresa's Cathedral of Yola Diocese.

Bishop Mamza went on to urge the Priests-elect to foster collaboration in Priestly ministry, saying, “A Priest is meant to serve, and he must work closely with the people; that is his primary assignment.”

He also challenged the faithful to support the new Priests in their new roles, and emphasized, “The parishioners are expected to cooperate with the Priests as they serve.”

Bishop Mamza called on the Priests-elect to remain humble and dedicated, emphasizing that Priesthood is a lifetime commitment to selfless service, not just a position.

“You are called to be guiding lights for your congregations. You must uphold holiness in your ministry,” he said.

The Catholic Church leader further said, “Each of these new Priests brings unique gifts and perspectives, and their presence will enrich our diocese. They are called not only to preach the Gospel but also to be shepherds who guide their people with love and dedication.”

The Local Ordinary of Yola Diocese since his Episcopal Consecration in April 2011 said the Deacons-elect “would be guiding beacons of faith in their parishes, fostering spiritual growth and community engagement.”

“They are not just called to preach the Gospel but to lead with love, dedication, and humility,” Bishop Mamza said.
