Plans are underway for training sessions targeting the Clergy and women and men Religious serving in the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi (ADN) as part of the “spiritual journey” of the ongoing Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, the Local Ordinary of the Kenyan Metropolitan See has said.

In his Pastoral Letter for 2025 Lent and Easter, Archbishop Philip Subira Anyolo highlights “social outreach programs” and “reconciliation efforts” as other initiatives in the celebrations of the 2025 Jubilee Year, which Pope Francis officially launched on the Eve of Christmas 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica.

“In preparation for the spiritual journey of the Jubilee, training sessions and workshops are being organized for Priests and religious,” Archbishop Anyolo says in his Pastoral Letter on the occasion of the 2025 Lenten Season and Easter.

The training sessions, which are to focus on the significance of the Holy Door of Hope, he says, aim to “equip the Clergy with the tools to guide the faithful in understanding and experiencing the graces of the Jubilee Year.”

In the 16-page Pastoral Letter published under the title, “He was put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification” drawn from Romans 4:25, Archbishop Anyolo, who officially launched the Jubilee Year in ADN on 29 December 2024 highlights other initiatives in his Metropolitan See, both realized and planned, that are part of the 2025 Jubilee Year celebrations.

He recalls the “Walking Together in Faith” initiative that was realized on 26 October 2024 at Regina Caeli Karen Parish of ADN, bringing together members of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (ICLSAL) serving in the Kenyan Metropolitan See in anticipation of the Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year and the Jubilee of Consecrated Life planned for 8-9 October 2025 in Rome.

“This event was aimed at uniting members of consecrated life and the broader community on a shared spiritual journey, reinforcing the idea that renewal is a collective mission,” says the Catholic Church leader, who has been at the helm of ADN since his installation in November 2021.

He says that his Metropolitan See has realized “mercy and outreach initiatives” as well as “educational and formation programs” in the context of the 2025 Jubilee Year that draws inspiration from the theme “Pilgrims of Hope” and hope that “does not disappoint”.

Alongside the opening of Holy Doors in various parishes and hospitals, Archbishop Anyolo notes that “these events set the tone for a year dedicated to renewal, reconciliation, and a call to hope amid challenging times.”

“These projects are tailored to local needs – ranging from social outreach programs to reconciliation efforts – that invite parishioners to act as agents of change in their communities,” says the Catholic Archbishop, who started his Episcopal Ministry in February 1996 as Bishop of Kenya’s Kericho Diocese.

“Together, these initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy by the Archdiocese of Nairobi to mobilize the community around a shared vision of hope, transformation, and active participation in God’s renewing work during the Jubilee Year 2025,” he says.

Pope Francis announced the start of a Year of Prayer on 21 January 2024 in preparation for the Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, the second in his Pontificate after the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015.

He said that the 2025 Jubilee Year will be “a year dedicated to rediscovering the great value and absolute need for prayer in one’s personal life, in the life of the Church, and in the world.”

Months later, on the Solemnity of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ on 9 May 2024, the Holy Father solemnly proclaimed the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025 at a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica, during which he delivered the Bull of Indiction of the planned Jubilee, “Spes non confundit” (Hope does not disappoint).

Scheduled to officially conclude on 6 January 2026, the Jubilee Year provides the people of God across the globe an opportunity to participate in various planned jubilee events at the Vatican and in their respective Episcopal Sees and of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (ICLSAL).
