A newly constituted association for a Catholic radio in the city of Sao Vicente, Cape Verde, will facilitate the formation and official launch of a radio station whose mission will be “to help the audience find meaning in life.”

“Last year (2018) the Capuchins asked for a collaboration with World Family of Radio Maria in order for their radio (Radio Nova) to be part of the Family of Radio Maria in Africa and in the world,” the Coordinator of Radio Maria Africa, Paolo Taffuri told ACI Africa Friday.

“Following consultations, the Association of Radio Maria Cape Verde was born on September 14, 2019 thereby bringing together representatives of the World Family of Radio Maria, the Capuchin Custody of Cabo Verde, the Diocese of Praia and the Diocese of Sao Vicente,” Mr. Taffuri disclosed to ACI Africa in an exclusive interview.

The Association of Radio Maria Cape Verde will therefore oversee the launch of Radio Nova de Maria as a collaboration between the World Family of Radio Maria and the Fransiscan Capuchins in the island country of the central Atlantic Ocean, Taffuri reiterated.

Expected to be officially inaugurated next year, the radio’s goal will be “to help people try and find the meaning of life in the light of the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

The World Family of Radio Maria is a private initiative within the Catholic Church that runs a network of Marian radio stations across the globe.

Radio Nova was started by the Capuchin Friars in 1992 who felt “in a country where moving from one place to another one needs to sail or to fly, a radio was a good way to disseminate the word of God.”

“Radio Nova will become Radio Nova de Maria,” Taffuri said and explained that the new name adds “the blessing of Mother Mary through this evangelization tool to the people living in and visiting the islands of Cape Verde.”
