Salesian Missions Facilitates “permanent water source” for a Tanzanian Catholic Institute

The U.S.-based development arm of the Religious Institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), Salesian Missions, has facilitated the access to clean and consistent water supply at Tanzania’s Don Bosco Kilimanjaro International Institute for Telecommunications, Electronics and Computers in the Archdiocese of Arusha.

Through the  “Clean Water Initiative,” the members of SDB at the institution have been able to drill a borehole and test water capacity, build a water tower and install a new water tank, and supply and install a water purifying system.

“Prior to the new water system, Don Bosco Kilimanjaro had to rely on water supplied from the city, which was not always consistent, especially during the dry season,” the leadership of Salesian Missions has said in a report shared with ACI Africa Thursday, July 9.

In the report published by the Salesian Missions July 7, the leadership of the U.S.-based entity says, “A permanent source of water is ensuring the institute has the water it needs to operate and improving the health of students.”

“The water supply is also allowing Salesian missionaries to cultivate the land so they can grow food for the institute and provide more job opportunities to local residents,” adds Salesian Missions leadership.

Statistics from water.org indicate that only 57 percent of Tanzania’s population of 57 million has access to an improved source of safe water.

According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), lack of access to safe, clean water for drinking, cooking and bathing causes waterborne illnesses such as malaria and cholera that account for close to half of the diseases affecting the population.

In the report shared with ACI Africa, the Director of Salesian Missions Fr. Gus Baek says, “From safe drinking water and healthy sanitation to agriculture, water is essential for life.”

“This water project in Tanzania, and others around the globe, ensure Salesian centers have the water they need so staff and students can work and learn in a healthy environment,” adds Fr. Baek.

Besides the Don Bosco Kilimanjaro Clean Water initiative project, Salesian Missions has also facilitated the construction of sanitation facilities at Don Bosco Didia Secondary school in Tanzania’s Shinyanga Diocese.
