Salesians Facilitate Clean Water, Improved Sanitation to 1,000s at Egyptian Institution

Clean Water Initiative

The U.S.-based development arm of the Religious Institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), Salesian Missions, has facilitated access to clean, fresh water and improved sanitation to more than 4,000 students at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Cairo, Egypt, the leadership has said in a report shared with ACI Africa Tuesday, August 4.

Through the “Clean Water Initiative,” SDB members at the Catholic institute have been able to install two safe water drinking supplies and renovated sanitation facilities such as bathrooms and toilets, which “had dramatically deteriorated over the last few years.”

“The toilets had cracks and bumps, and the floor insulation was losing its function due to high and frequent exposure to moisture and water accumulation under the floor,” Salesian Missions Media Representative, Hannah Gregory says in the report shared with ACI Africa.

She adds, “The materials used in the plumbing systems were showing signs of corrosion and deterioration which caused frequent leaks.”

The renovation project also involved the dismantling of the old facilities and upgrading both the plumbing and electrical systems, including the use of LED lighting, which the Salesian Missions official says “will provide a drastic reduction in energy costs and maintenance.”

Other activities facilitated by funding from Salesian Missions include plastering of walls and pouring of a new concrete slab, provision of five new toilets and new sinks as well as the fixing of posters above the sinks reminding the students about good hygiene, Ms. Gregory reports.

SDB members at the Cairo-based institute have purchased and installed two steel 240-litre water coolers, one in the locker room and another in the courtyard, to ensure students have access to clean water during physical education sessions and recreation, the August 4 report indicates.

“From safe drinking water and healthy sanitation to agriculture, water is essential for life,” the Director of Salesian Missions, Fr. Gus Baek has been quoted as saying in the report, adding, “This water project in Egypt and others around the globe ensure Salesian centers have the water they need so staff and students can work and learn in a healthy environment.”

Besides Egypt, the New York-based SDB development agency has undertaken similar ‘Clean Water Initiative” projects in other African countries including Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Madagascar, Togo, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia.

In Malawi, Salesian partnerships have facilitated the reaching out to 382 needy families at St. Don Bosco Parish in Lilongwe, offering them nutritional support in the form of maize.

More in Africa

“We sincerely thank Salesian Missions donors for their support, which enabled us to reach out to needy families of our parish. Salesian Missions prompt response helped us to mobilize and assist the people that needed help most,” St. Don Bosco Parish Priest, Fr. Oswald Mulenga says in the August 4 report shared with ACI Africa.

In the report, Salesian Missions Director, Fr. Baek expresses his appreciation for the partnerships and notes, “Providing maize helps families have the nutritional support they need, especially during a time of great difficulty during the pandemic.”

“Many families have seen a loss of income and have been pushed further into poverty,” the Salesian Cleric adds.
