Ethiopia and Burkina Faso Apostolic Nuncios to be Consecrated Bishops Friday

The Holy Father will on Friday, October 4 consecrate as Bishops the new Apostolic Nuncios to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, Monsignor Antoine Camilleri and Monsignor Antoine Paolo Rudelli respectively.

The Prelates, were appointed Nuncios on September 3.

Msgr. Antoine Camilleri who will represent the Holy Father in Ethiopia was born in 1965 in Malta-Europe. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1991. 

A Canon Law graduate, Msgr. Camilleri joined the Holy See diplomatic service in 1999. He has served in a number of Apostolic Nunciatures, among them Papua New Guinea, Uganda and Cuba; as well as the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State in the Vatican.

In 2013, he was appointed Undersecretary of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State, a position he held until his latest appointment to head the Nunciature in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

He speaks Italian, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Romanian and Russian.

Msgr. Camilleri is expected to take over from Archbishop Louis Bianco who transferred to the East African country of Uganda.

Msgr. Paul Rudelli who has been appointed Nuncio to Burkina Faso was born in 1970 in Italy.

He was ordained priest in 1995. The Canon Law and Moral Theology graduate joined the Holy See diplomatic service in 2001 and has served in Ecuador and Poland Nunciatures and in the General Affairs Section of the Secretariat of State.

Until his appointment, Msgr. Rudelli who speaks Italian, English, French, Spanish and Polish was the Holy See Special Envoy and Permanent Observer at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, France.

Msgr. Rudelli is expected to succeed Archbishop Piergiorgio Bertoldi who was transferred to Mozambique in March 2019.

Pope Francis will also ordain as Bishop Mgsr. Paolo Borgia, who is the new Apostolic Nuncio to Ivory Coast.
