Security officials in South Sudan’s Western Bahr El Ghazal State have reportedly arrested four suspects in connection with the daytime theft at the residence of the Catholic Bishop of Wau.

“We have four suspects arrested. The most important thing to take after any criminal activity is investigation and arrest,” Police Commissioner, Samuel Ajuong Cuar told journalists in Wau Tuesday, June 1.

Mr Ajuong added the suspects have been detained in Wau, the capital of Western Bhar el Gahzal state, and that they are expected to be presented before a court “for justice to prevail.”

On May 9, the residence of Bishop Mathew Remijio Adam was looted in a daytime theft, an incident that the Vicar General of the South Sudanese Diocese confirmed.

Fr. Germano Bernado Baku said that the May 9 incident happened sometime in the afternoon in the absence of the Local Ordinary, Bishop Matthew Remijio, and security guards “who don’t work on Sundays.”

“The thieves broke the window (of the Bishop’s House) and got into the house,” Fr. Baku explained, adding, “The thieves disappeared with an undisclosed amount of money, two laptop computers, a wireless mobile Motorola, and an important document belonging to the Bishop.”

Speaking on behalf of the Diocese of Wau June 1, the Parish Priest of St. Mary Help of Christian, Fr. Dominic Luka acknowledged with appreciation efforts made by State security officials to apprehend the suspects.

“On behalf of the Church in the Catholic Diocese of Wau, and on behalf of Bishop Mathew Remijio Adam of Wau Diocese, I want to extend my gratitude to the police and security agents in South Sudan’s Western Bhar el Ghazal state,” Fr. Luka said.

He added, “When the incident occurred on the 9th of May 2021, for people to go and steal from the residence of the Bishop, we in the Church didn’t do anything because we are in the responsibility of the government.”

During the May 10 press conference, Fr. Baku had appealed to the faithful of Wau Diocese to help in identifying those who broke into the Bishop’s house.

“We ask our faithful to help and identify because the bag and the computer hold the things of the Bishop. If someone sees anybody selling a computer and has things of the Church seen in it, he or she should assist the security agents to know about the looters,” Fr. Baku said.

Bishop Remijio, a member of the Comboni Missionaries, was ordained a Bishop in January this year following his appointment last November.

On May 5, the Bishop who is a native of Wau Diocese was appointed Apostolic Administrator of South Sudan’s Rumbek Diocese.
