A Catholic Parish church in Zimbabwe has been closed following an incident of desecration during the early hours of Monday, January 24.

In a message obtained by ACI Africa, the Parish Priest of St. Andrew’s Catholic Parish of Bulawayo Archdiocese says robbers broke into the church and made away with “Monstrance, Chalices, Mass Kit, Ciboriums containing the Blessed Sacrament”.

“Dear St Andrew’s Parish Family, it is with a painful heart that I announce the temporary closure of St Andrew’s Parish Church due to a robbery break in and desecration that took place in the early hours of today January 24, 2022,” Fr. Louis Chileshe says in the message published on Facebook.

Unfortunately, Fr. Chileshe adds, the desecrators “also broke into the parish Church and stole the Monstrance, Chalices, Mass Kit, Ciboriums containing the Blessed Sacrament and broke down the tabernacle.”

Following the incident, the Parish Priest says he has “since managed to pick up the Blessed Sacrament, which they disposed of in many places in the bush and by the roadside.”

The member of the Congregation of Mariannhill Missionaries (CMM) adds, “This act renders our Church Grounds desecrated and will need to be consecrated again by the Archbishop."

It is in line with Canon Law that the parish “will be closed until further notice,” says Fr. Chileshe in reference to Canon Law 1211.

Can. 1211 states, “Sacred places are violated by gravely injurious actions done in them with scandal to the faithful, actions which, in the judgment of the local ordinary, are so grave and contrary to the holiness of the place that it is not permitted to carry on worship in them until the damage is repaired by a penitential rite according to the norm of the liturgical books.”

In his Facebook message, the Parish Priest of St. Andrew’s called on the people of God under his pastoral care to “pray for each other, for the parish church and a complete trust in God that He will bring us back soon in His soon-to-be-consecrated House.”
