Catholic Major Seminary Formator Appointed Bishop for Mamfe Diocese in Cameroon

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Aloysius Fondong Abangalo who has been serving as a formator at an inter-Diocesan Major Seminary in Cameroon the Bishop for Mamfe Diocese in the Central African nation.

The Tuesday, February 22 Episcopal appointment of the formator at St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary in Bambui in the Archdiocese of Bamenda was published by the Holy See Press Office.

The Cameroonian Bishop-elect is expected to succeed Archbishop Andrew Nkea who was transferred to the Archdiocese of Bamenda in 2019.

Born in 1973 in Cameroon’s Buea Diocese, Mons. Abangalo was ordained a Priest for the same Diocese in 2006.

The alumnus of St. Thomas Aquinas inter-Diocesan Major Seminary has been pursuing a Doctorate in Canon Law at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome.

In 2014, he graduated with a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of Central Africa (UCAC).

Since his Priestly ordination, Mons. Abangalo has served in several positions including, Vicar of Holy Family Parish in Limbe between 2006-2007 and Dean of Our Lady of Grace College in Muyuka between 2007-2009; Diocesan Bursar and Member of the College of Consultors between 2009-2011; and Defender of the Bond at the Inter-Diocesan Court of Bamenda from 2014 to 2019 among other responsibilities.

Once ordained Bishop, Mons. Abangalo is expected to oversee the 10,500 square-kilometer Catholic Diocese that was erected in February 1999, with a population of 155,000 Catholics according to 2019 statistics.
