Catholic Bishops in Kenya have challenged communicators who profess the Catholic faith to take into account their Christian faith when reporting.

In their message ahead of the 56th World Communications Day (WCD) marked on Sunday, May 29, the members of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) said that Catholic media reports need to be characterized by the gospel values of “love, empathy, compassion and care”.

“Our work must therefore be different from secular communication agencies, or communicators without faith,” KCCB members say in their May 27 statement that was signed by the Chairman of Commission for Social Communications, Archbishop Anthony Muheria.

The apostolate of Catholic communications, they added, “must seek to reflect and portray the hearts’ expressions of love, empathy, compassion and care.”

Making reference to Pope Francis’ Message for 2022 WCD  that proposes the theme, “Listening with the Ear of the Heart”, KCCB members said that communication that takes into account listening “deeply” has the ability to turn sorrow, pain and discouragement in people’s hearts into joy and peace.

They said, “In the current world of superficiality and noise, we must lead the people to listen deeply, and to speak deeply, and in this way, you will lead them to an encounter with the risen Lord.”

In their message, Catholic Bishops in Kenya urged Catholic communicators to use their various platforms to ensure that not only the “Salvific Word of Christ” but also the “face of Christ” reach all the corners of the East African country.

“You are also called to explain the ‘Truth of the Word’ in many programs, books, videos, tweets, clips, and images, where we seek to expound on our faith, on Christian doctrine and on the great teachers who are the saints,” they said.

KCCB members acknowledged with appreciation “huge strides” Catholic media entities in Kenya have made in facilitating the process of evangelization in the country.

“We congratulate you in the huge strides you have made to use techno advances to aid the efforts of evangelization,” they said, addressing themselves to Catholic media houses in Kenya, and added, “You are able to bring Christ to the stage of modern life, accommodated to today's digital society; you have brought His face in faces of mercy and images that evoke His presence.”

Catholic Bishops further told members of Catholic media entities in Kenya, “Through you, Christ continues being present, and speaking even outside the liturgical celebrations, and through your efforts many are touched by His graces to conversion and to a deeper relationship with God.”

Ahead of WCD 2022, Catholic Media houses in the Archdiocese of Nairobi conducted campaigns to sensitize the people of God in the Kenyan Metropolitan See about the annual celebration that was established in 1967 by Pope Paul VI to provide an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities of modern means of communication

The Kenyan Archdiocese that is headquartered in the capital city of the East African nation has a total of 15 Catholic media entities, which operate on print, broadcast, and digital platforms.

They include the Paulines Publications Africa, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops Communications (KCCB), the National Mirror, the Archdiocese of Nairobi, the New People Media Center, and the Messenger of Mary Immaculate.

Others are Radio Maria Nairobi, Bayard Publications, the Bosco Eastern Africa Multimedia Services (BEAMS), the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa(AMECEA), The Seed magazine, Loyola Center for Media and Communications, Radio Waumini, Capuchin TV, and the Association for Catholic Information in Africa (ACI Africa).
