The Clergy and Laity of the Catholic Diocese of Meru in Kenya who spoke to ACI Africa on the sidelines of the November 5 beatification of Venerable Servant of God Maria Carola Cecchin hailed the celebration as a boost to their Christian faith.

The beatification of the member of the Sisters of St. Joseph Cottolengo, (Cottolengo Sisters) is the second such celebration on the Kenyan soil, after that of Sr. Irene Stefani (Nyaatha) in May 2015.

In an interview with ACI Africa on November 5, Fr. Jeremy Gitonga, a member of the Clergy of Meru Diocese, said the beatification of the Italian-born Nun “has contributed to the growth of faith in Meru Diocese because people have come from far places to witness the event.”

“By people coming from far places to witness, it also makes the church grow, because as they leave this place, they would want to imitate the faith of this role model,” Fr. Gitonga told ACI Africa at the end of the Eucharistic celebration that was held at Kinoru Stadium in Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Meru.

Blessed Carola’s life of faith, charity, and self-giving in the care for the poor that contributed to her beatification should inspire a spirit of transformation among the people of God, Fr. Gitonga said.

In a separate interview, the Director of Caritas in Meru Diocese said the beatification event “is very important to us as the Catholic Diocese of Meru and it means a lot to me as an individual that somebody who has worked in Meru can be beatified.”

“The beatification of Sr. Maria Carola has greatly boosted our faith as the people of Meru,” Mr. Mwiti said, adding that the fact that thousands have traveled from far to witness the event is also a boost to faith.

The official of Caritas who served in the committee that planned for the beatification celebration that was presided over by the Papal delegate, Antoine Cardinal Kambanda of Rwanda's Kigali Archdiocese, described the story of Blessed Carola as very inspiring.

“I am a member of CMA and my prayer is that men should be more present in their families to guide and to spearhead the affairs within their families so that we can mentor our children to be like Sr. Carola,” Mr. Mwiti said during the November 5 interview with ACI Africa.

On her part, Faith Mueni told ACI Africa that the beatification of the Cottolengo Nun has “increased my faith; it has equally encouraged us to be prayerful.”

“The sacrifice she made while doing the work of God is what inspires me in her life so much,” Ms. Mueni said.

For Kelvin Murithi, a member of the youth of Meru Diocese, the beatification in the Kenyan Episcopal See “is an honor” for the people of God in the region.

“We are very happy; we are actually inspired as Meru people to have a saint beatified in our homeland, it is an honor and we feel privileged,” Mr. Murithi said.

In the example of Sr. Carola, Mr. Kelvin said, “We hope many young people will embrace evangelization even to the extent of going outside Meru.”

In his homily during the November celebration, the Papal delegate, Cardinal Kambanda, called upon Christians to see in Blessed Carola an example of missionary zeal worth emulating.

Blessed Carola, the Rwandan Catholic Church leader said, “had an absolute trust in the loving care of God and came in this land to be a witness to this so that we can also acquire the same faith and trust that frees us from all fear and calls to us to faithfulness to God.”
