Members of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are seeking humanitarian assistance to facilitate the delivery of supplies that they say are “desperately needed” by thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) who have escaped violence in the Eastern part of the country.
In a report, SDB officials say thousands of IDPs fleeing violence between the Armed Forces of DRC (FARDC) and the M23 rebels in Rutshuru Territory, North Kivu Province, are seeking shelter at the playground of Don Bosco Ngangi Youth Center in the Archdiocese of Goma.
“The situation is dire as there are not enough supplies for people and this area was not set up for a camp like this. Supplies are desperately needed and Salesians are calling for help,” SDB officials say in the Tuesday, November 22 report.
“There are no latrines, drinking water, food or firewood,” they say, and add, “During the first day, about 30 trees were cut down to build more stable shelters and provide wood for cooking.”
SDB officials further say that about 10 food plantations belonging to local residents were damaged to accommodate the IDPs.
