Members of the College of Consultors of the Catholic Diocese of Wa in Ghana have elected a Diocesan Administrator to govern the Episcopal See “ad interim” following the death of the Local Ordinary, Richard Kuuia Cardinal Baawobr.

In their December 3 meeting, the Consultors of the Ghanaian Diocese elected Fr. Edward B. Tengan to oversee the administration of the Diocese “until the Holy Father appoints a Diocesan Bishop”, the Chancellor Secretary of the Curia of Wa Diocese, Fr. Benjamin Diiriter, has announced.

According to Canon Law, members of the College of Consultors are expected to a Priest to serve as Diocesan Administrator to oversee the running of the Diocese until the Holy See appoints a new Bishop and takes possession of that Episcopal See.

The Priest to be elected should be at least 35 years of age. Additionally, he should have served as a Catholic Priest for not less than five years.

The election Fr. Tengan to govern Wa Diocese “ad interim until the appointment of a Diocesan Bishop by the Roman Pontiff” was preceded by consultations, with the Holy See directing the College of Consultors to convene the elective meeting, Fr. Diiriter adds in his statement.

Since May 2016, Wa Diocese was under the leadership of Cardinal Baawobr. The member of the Society of Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) died on November 27 at the age of 63. He was among the Catholic Church leaders elevated to Cardinal during the August 27 Consistory.
