Extend God’s Kingdom “through service to humanity”: Archbishop in South Sudan to Clergy

The Catholic Archbishop of Juba in South Sudan has called on members of the Clergy in Torit Diocese to contribute to the extension of the kingdom of God through their service to humanity.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving Mass to welcome the newly appointed Bishop of the South Sudanese Diocese on Sunday, January 8, Archbishop Stephen Ameyu Martin said pastoral agents need to cultivate the virtue of selfless service.

“To extend the kingdom of God, we must serve our brothers and sisters,” Archbishop Ameyu said during the Holy Mass to welcome Mons. Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi Napeta that was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral of Torit Diocese.           

He added, “We need to extend our relationship with God to do his work diligently.”        

The Local Ordinary of Juba Diocese who doubles as the Apostolic Administrator of Torit Diocese reminded members of the Clergy of their pastoral responsibilities, saying, “No one plays anything on behalf of anyone; even me as your shepherd I play my part as a shepherd.”

“I have to construct my relationship with the Lord so that I may be a worthy minister of this important office that he has given us,” Archbishop Ameyu said, and continued, “Each of us should play his or her role in society very well.” 

The Catholic Church leader further called on those in authority “not to boast of their positions but to deliver services to the people.”

“All of us are given this work not just to praise ourselves. We should not be called by our positions but rather by the name of the servant,” the South Sudanese Archbishop said.

He added, “The Lord wants to transform each one of us radically so that we can serve whoever is under us in the family, institutions, and the Church because in that way we can build a better nation and the Church through service.”.

The South Sudanese Archbishop further called on members of the Clergy in Torit Diocese “to be examples to all the Catholics in South Sudan because the sun rises from us and we are expected to do more.”
